Amazon-Powered AI Cameras Used to Detect Emotions of Unwitting UK Train Passengers

Thousands of people catching trains in the United Kingdom likely had their faces scanned by Amazon software as part of widespread artificial intelligence trials, new documents reveal. The image recognition system was used to predict travelers' age, gender, and potential emotions--with the suggestion that the data could be used in advertising systems in the future. During the past two years, eight train stations around the UK--including large stations such as London's Euston and Waterloo, Manchester Piccadilly, and other smaller stations--have tested AI surveillance technology with CCTV cameras with the aim of alerting staff to safety incidents and potentially reducing certain types of crime. The extensive trials, overseen by rail infrastructure body Network Rail, have used object recognition--a type of machine learning that can identify items in videofeeds--to detect people trespassing on tracks, monitor and predict platform overcrowding, identify antisocial behavior ("running, shouting, skateboarding, smoking"), and spot potential bike thieves. Separate trials have used wireless sensors to detect slippery floors, full bins, and drains that may overflow.


Microsoft will phase out facial recognition AI that could detect emotions

Microsoft is keenly aware of the mounting backlash toward facial recognition, and it's shuttering a significant project in response. The company has revealed it will "retire" facial recognition technology that it said could infer emotions as well as characteristics like age, gender and hair. The AI raised privacy questions, Microsoft said, and offering a framework created the potential for discrimination and other abuses. There was also no clear consensus on the definition of emotions, and no way to create a generalized link between expressions and emotions. New users of Microsoft's Face programming framework no longer have access to these attribute detection features.

A paper published on Wednesday in The Journal of Neuroscience unveiled research that found that neurotypical adults (those not displaying autistic characteristics) and adults with autism might have key differences in a region of their brain called the IT cortex. If there is any doubt in your mind that are not headed to a future where mind-machine meld is going to be the new norm, just look at Elon Musk's Neuralink's BCI. The animal trials are already underway, as claimed by Musk, a monkey with a wireless implant in his skull with tiny wires can play video games with his mind. Although designed to cure a wide variety of diseases, the experiment aligns with Musk's long-term vision of coming up with a brain-computer interface that is able to compete with increasingly powerful AIs. However, Neuralink's proposed device is an invasive one that requires fine threads that need to be implanted in the brain. And as if these invasive devices were not scary enough for a person like me, new breakthroughs in neuroscience and artificial intelligence might infiltrate our emotions -- the last bastion of personal privacy. Don't get me wrong, I am all for using the novel tech for healthcare purposes, but who is to say that this can't be used by nefarious players for mind control or "thought policing" by the State.
